Have you ever had an “ah-ha” moment? A moment of pure clarity where all things seem so free and clear? Over the past few months I have experienced many a “ah-ha” moment. I could be brushing my teeth or in the middle of a meeting at work and boom the not so obvious becomes obvious.
So often in our lives we move to the beat of someone else’s drum. Be it our children, our co-workers or our significant other; we are always being pulled in some direction or another to do something for someone else. As a woman (and mother) I found that my life is not my own, this “ah-ha” moment came during a conversation with my supervisor. She said, “Make a list of all the people who are most important and rank them.” I did, she read, she questioned. “Where is Brendolyn?” (Being my normal silly self I immediately wanted to sing “Here I am!! Here I am!) But she had a good point, where was Brendolyn? As we continued to talk I realized that my roles as a mother, daughter, granddaughter, sister etc overshadowed my obligation to self.
“But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself.”- Carrie Bradshaw
We spend so many of twenty-four hours doing for others we tend to become an after thought. From the time my feet hit the floor at 4 in the morning I am doing for others. Getting little ones ready for school, sending them off to school, rushing to work, working, rushing home to get to after-school sports, doing homework, giving baths, checking up on elderly grandparents and teenage siblings, and the list of things done for others goes on. Somewhere during all of that I find time to read last month’s Cosmopolitan or watch some reality television. Does any of this sound familiar?
I say all of that to say, at some point you have to stop and ask yourself, “Self, where do you rank?” Right now I have no time to really find Brendolyn, there just aren’t enough hours in a day. However, a family trip to the East Coast is coming up, a trip in which I will in fact find time for self.
So I dare you to do something for yourself on this Wednesday. Get a mid-day manicure or grab your favorite treat and enjoy it before getting home so you don’t have to share! Take a minute to Love yourself on today!
